The object
It looks like a button until it starts remembering.
Input Sigil is a small interface organism made for Proof Sheet. It accepts one familiar command—input—and gives it a chassis, a living screen, a memory of local machines, and just enough electrical instability to make the familiar feel newly discovered.

The chassis
A dark, raised analog shell gives the control physical mass: inset rim, painted edge, contact shadow, and a small pressed state. The object begins as something the hand already understands.

The substrate
The background is no longer a decorative texture. It is 216 individual orange bits arranged in a continuous 24×9 field. Each cell is a possible mark, not a piece of a finished picture.

The signal
The upper field is 108 white one-bit cells in a 36×3 strip. Every bit makes its own decision once per second, after its own delay. The field never redraws as one obedient rectangle; shapes arrive as a side effect of disagreement.

The power event
INPUT, 00 // LOCAL, and the perimeter aura share one slow, irregular surge. Their brightness, opacity, and glow rise and fall together like one screen on unstable current.

The incantation
INPUT types itself into existence. The block cursor stays behind, flashing in the old terminal rhythm, waiting for the next command. The label is not decoration; it is the machine speaking its command aloud.
Runtime / no illusion of stillness
The magic is only timing.
A 24×9 field underneath, a 36×3 strip above it / 324 bits in all. Each one wakes on its own private delay, then decides again every second, alone, forever. Nothing here loops. Nothing here is told what to become. The image is only what a crowd looks like when no one is in charge of it.
The text doesn't get to disagree with itself. It belongs to one machine, so it keeps one clock / a slow surge in brightness and glow, shared by both labels, in lockstep. Right now that clock is quietly listening to Rovinj, Istria. Weather it has never seen is deciding how fast a light breathes here. Familiar enough to read. Unfamiliar enough to feel alive.
The signal didn't stay inside the button. A vertical field runs beside this paragraph now, and a ring of three-bit decisions circles the next idea before you've read it. The same small choice can be a pixel, a border, a reply to the weather, or the edge of a thought. Its shape changes. What's deciding it doesn't.
Potential / the next signal
What else could leave a trace?
This one remembers almost nothing / a seed, a place, an hour. A real provenance runs longer than that: every hand, every condition, every decision that had to happen for this exact object to exist. The button could hold more of that chain.
- 08Inheritance
Every state could carry its parents forward / the image, the weather, the seed, the model, the hand that pressed it. Not a certificate stapled on after the fact. Proof folded into the object at the moment it became itself.
- 09Unresolved
Most chains break somewhere. Rather than inventing the missing link, the object could just show the break / a dark interval, an orbit with nothing in it, a field that never quite resolves. Not knowing, rendered honestly, is still information.
- 10Conservation
Everything this runs on will eventually be gone / the browser, the font, the machine reading this sentence. Before that happens, the sigil could leave behind what it would take to meet it again: its seed, its conditions, its dependencies, in order. Not a photograph of the thing. A way back to it.
- 11Borrowed Light
Not every decision in the object is its own. Weather, the clock, a model version upstream / all of it leaves fingerprints the object didn't choose. It could mark which parts of itself are borrowed, and from where.
- 12Silent Revision
Something changed and nothing announced it. The object could hold the version it remembers being next to the version it currently is, and refuse to quietly reconcile the two.
- 13Refusal
Most systems default to a confident guess when they don't know. This one could have a state that means exactly I won't claim to know that / distinct from wrong, distinct from missing.
